Welcome to Peartrees - our family home for many years, and a place we love sharing.

I'm Nikki, and thank you for booking your holiday with us; I really hope you have a fabulous time here.

I'm a passionate planet protector, so I've tried to do something a little different with Peartrees: create a home where a luxurious holiday and an eco-conscious one aren't a trade-off.

That means everything newly bought for the house is as sustainable as I could make it. I've spent many an evening researching brands that genuinely care - about the climate, about resources, about doing things differently - and you'll find them in every room, from the bedding to the coffee.

Better waste management

Waste is high on my agenda - how we sort and manage it at home decides whether materials get a second life, end up in landfill or go up in smoke. Getting this right is one of the simplest things any of us can do for the planet's resources.

Of all the bins, the little food waste one quietly does the most good. When food scraps go to landfill they rot without air, and that produces methane - a greenhouse gas many times more potent than carbon dioxide at warming the planet. A banana skin in the wrong bin genuinely does more damage than you'd think.

Sorted separately, that same waste becomes something useful instead: food waste collections are composted or sent to anaerobic digestion, where the gas is captured to generate energy and what's left goes back to farmland as fertiliser. So those few extra seconds of scraping plates into the right bin turn a climate problem into clean energy - not a bad return on a tea bag and some carrot peelings.

Eco-friendly products

I've done my best to fill the house with better products - ones that consider the environment in the materials they're made from and in how they can be recycled at the end of their life. A few you'll come across:

  1. Duvets and mattress toppers made from bamboo.
  2. Pillows filled with ocean recovered plastic.
  3. Cushions made from recycled fabrics.
  4. Sustainable bamboo pieces throughout the house.
  5. Bio-based electricals, including the kettle, toaster, coffee machine and knives.
  6. Glass, bamboo and metal cooking equipment.
  7. Refillable cleaning products in dispensers.

My aim with Peartrees is to show how simple a few small changes can be - and how much they add up. Every little helps, and baby steps beat no steps. Above all, I want you to have a wonderful stay - and if you head home with a couple of ideas for living that little bit more consciously, even better.

Sustainable hot tub?

The hot tub is here for one reason: pure holiday enjoyment - it's the treat most of us don't have at home. But we won't pretend it's a light touch on resources. Keeping it warm takes electricity every day, and because we change the water every changeover to keep it safe and spotless for every guest, the water use is genuinely big.

So we've worked hard to shrink that footprint. We researched the market in detail before buying, and the tub we chose is one of the best insulated available, holding its heat on as little electricity as possible. We also installed an outdoor hot tap, so on changeover days we can fill it at the right temperature straight away rather than burning electricity heating a tub of cold water.

And the biggest step...

Peartrees now runs on solar panels backed by a battery stack, so much of the energy warming your evening soak comes from the Bournemouth sunshine that brought you here in the first place.

Giving back

Caring for the planet doesn't stop at the front door of Peartrees. In my day job I run ETHICLY, a digital agency with a difference - alongside our client work we regularly take on pro-bono projects for causes that protect the planet, and this year I'm helping to run Peace One Day.

Through ETHICLY I'm also a member of 1% for the Planet, which means a slice of everything we earn goes directly to organisations that make a difference too. I donate to The Dorset Children's Foundation, supporting local families right here in the county you're holidaying in, and in previous years we've supported the Kelp Forest Alliance and its work restoring the ocean's great underwater forests.

None of this is about ticking boxes. It's the same thinking that shaped Peartrees: businesses - and holidays - can be run in a way that gives more than they take. So by staying here, you've quietly played a part in all of the above, and that's worth a soak in the hot tub on its own.
